Hey ladies! So this will be something new that we'll try to do for each Sunday. I'll post a compilation of Whit's and my study notes and then the additional topics that we discuss...this week is just gonna be the compilation. Love you girlies!
End of John 1 Notes:
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown. Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.” “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied. As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.” “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.” Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!” Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”
JOHN 1:43-50 NLT
Note: Nathaniel only mentioned in the Gospel of John.
We see him as a very honest person, a man of integrity…but falling victim to prejudice…
Nazareth was a pretty shady neighborhood…similar to how we view Compton…what we assume that Nathaniel was doing under the fig tree is that he was praying for God to show him the truth about the Messiah…and what surprises him is that Jesus saw the innermost workings of his heart…
God sees all the innermost workings of our hearts and we can learn:
1. GOD WATCHES EVERYTHING I DO
For God watches how people live; he sees everything they do.
JOB 34:21 NLT
The LORD looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men.
PSALM 33:13 NASB
Mark well that GOD doesn’t miss a move you make; he’s aware of every step you take.
PROVERBS 5:21 THE MESSAGE
2. GOD IS WATCHING ME BECAUSE HE CARES FOR ME
Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I
even remained alive here after seeing Him?”
GENESIS 16:13 NASB
What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And
the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a
whole flock of sparrows.
LUKE 12:6-7 NLT
Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
1 PETER 5:7 NLT
3. GOD WATCHES ME FOR FUTURE ACCOUNTABILITY
What sorrow awaits those who try to hide their plans from the LORD, who do their evil deeds in the dark!
“The LORD can’t see us,” they say. “He doesn’t know what’s going on!” How foolish can you be?...
ISAIAH 29:15-16 NLT
He sees through vain pretensions, spots evil a long way off— no one pulls the wool over his eyes!
Job 11:11 THE MESSAGE
Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.
ROMANS 14:12 NLT
4. GOD WATCHES SO HE CAN REWARD ME WHEN I DO THE RIGHT THING!
Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
MATTHEW 6:4 NLT
Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God... So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just
the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
GALATIANS 6:7-9 NLT

John 2: The First Miracle
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." "Woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them,
"Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples put their faith in him. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
John 2:1-12 TNIV
With Jesus was his mother, Peter, Andrew, Phillip, Nathaniel (who was from Cana), and possibly John
It is interesting the Mary turned to Jesus with this problem because He had yet to perform a miracle up til now. Vs 11 indicates that it was His first miracle, but she still turns to Jesus
Jesus’ response to Mary seems to indicate that He feels His mother is being presumptuous in asking for this favor like she holds sway over His miracle working since she is His mother, but Christ indicates that His miracles are on His own time…so should we should understand that when presenting our requests to God
But what we do get from this passage is that:
1. I can come to Jesus with my problems
Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find.
Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
Matthew 7:7 NLT
2. I can expect Jesus to challenge my way of thinking
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.
Ephesians 3:20 NLT
“The days are coming,” declares the LORD… “New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills…. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.”
Amos 9:13-14 TNIV
3. I can trust that Jesus’ solution will meet my needs
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches,
which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19 NLT
God’s way is always the best way!
4. I can know that problems give me the opportunity to grow in my faith
So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for
a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and
purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith
remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the
day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
1 Peter 1:6-7 NLT
His disciples before believed that He was the Messiah, but after witnessing Him change the elements of the wine, they believed Him to be God…
